Getting Started with APRS Chat
What You'll Need
- A valid amateur radio license with a callsign
- An Android or iOS device
- One of the following connection methods:
- Internet access (for APRS-IS)
- A TNC device (for RF connections)
Step 1: Download the App
APRS Chat is available for both Android and iOS devices. Download from your device's app store:
Step 2: Configure Your Station
When you first launch APRS Chat, you'll be asked to enter your callsign and configure your station settings:
- Callsign: Enter your amateur radio callsign (e.g., N0CALL)

SSID: Choose an SSID that represents your station type:

- Symbol: Select an icon to represent your station on the map
Step 3: Choose a Connection Method
APRS Chat supports multiple connection methods. Choose the one that fits your setup:
APRS-IS (Easiest)
Connect via the internet to the APRS Internet System. Best for getting started quickly.

Connect to a network-attached TNC like Dire Wolf or a hardware TNC with TCP support.

Once connected, you're ready to send APRS messages:
- Tap the New Message button
- Enter the destination callsign (e.g.,
N0CALL-9) - Type your message (max 67 characters for RF compatibility)
- Tap Send
Tip: Start by sending a message to yourself or a nearby station to verify your setup is working correctly.
